Willenhall Town 2 Bromsgrove Rovers 1
By Russell Brown
Birmingham Senior Cup holders Willenhall edged through to a dream home tie against Wolves with an extra time winner from Rovers old boy Matthew Barnes-Homer.
A dull first half soon made way for an exciting second period and it was a night for former players scoring against their old clubs as ex Red forward Gary Hay broke the deadlock a minute after the break after being gifted an extremely soft goal.
A ball in from Nathan Lamey on the left looked a routine take for keeper Dean Coleman, but he hesitated and Hay needed no further invitation, taking the ball around the stranded keeper and slotting home.
That was rough justice on a Willenhall side that had kept the current league leaders on the defensive for long periods, but they were to gain their reward in the 73rd minute.
The impressive Mark Briggs, who had earlier threatened with a long range free kick, delivered a corner right onto the head of central defender Todd Perry, who buried the ball with some gusto.
Despite further chances, the game drifted into extra time and Willenhall wrapped up the tie when Barnes-Homer struck a fabulous rising drive out of the reach of Chris Taylor to set up a third round meeting with current manager Mel Eves’ former employ.
