Willenhall Town 0 Shepshed Dynamo 0
Both sides are in today’s draw for the third qualifying round after failing to convert their chances in an action packed FA Cup tie at Noose Lane.
Shepshed were indebted to debutante keeper Simon Baldwin who made a string of fine saves, the most important being a last minute block from marksman John Quilt, but it was certainly not all one way as Nathan Vaughan in the Red’s goal also had a busy afternoon.
After a torrential downpour had threatened this tie, some sterling work by the Willenhall staff and volunteers ensured that the game would go ahead, but the reward was to be a low key first half that failed to raise the enthusiasm of a 190 strong crowd.
However, the second forty five minutes was to make up for that as both sides went on the offensive and also made heroes out of both keepers who excelled on the day.
The duel between Quilt and Baldwin started when Gary Hay found his strike a partner in space in the Dynamo area and the keeper had to turn away a fierce shot from Willenhall’s top scorer. From the resulting corner, Baldwin then kicked Mark Creighton’s header off the line.
Vaughan also employed his feet to save the home side as he blocked Matthew Moran’s effort as Willenhall switched off at the back to allow the visiting forward to race in on goal.
Hay then struck the base of the post with a fine shot on the turn and Wes Armstrong again brought the best out of Vaughan as the action came thick and fast.
In the final stages, Richie Field thought he had taken the tie as his header finally beat Baldwin only for defender Nathan Tate to clear on the goal line, but the chance of the tie came in the final minute.
Substitute Danny McGhee beat the offside trap and with Shepshed struggling to get back, the on loan Hednesford midfielder could have claimed the glory, but unselfishly squared the ball for Quilt, who from three yards out, planted his shot straight at the keeper.
