(Willenhall win 4-3 on Penalties)
To describe this cup tie as dramatic would prove to be a massive understatement as Willenhall grasped a last chance to take the game into extra time and eventually triumph in a penalty shoot out.
The Red’s were effectively out of the competition after two second half goals undid all of the hard work involved in gaining a single goal lead that should have been built upon. Instead a tepid second half performance threatened to dump the West Midlanders out of the cup.
Shepshed, who had received a let off in the first meeting between these two sides, were thankful for an early goal line clearance from Guiney as Mark Creighton had the first good chance of the half for the visitors and a telling last minute tackle denied Gary Hay as Willenhall threatened to rip apart the hosts in the early stages.
However, the visitors made the breakthrough thanks to a defensive mistake when Simon Baldwin’s throw out to O’Brien saw the Shepshed man fail to get the ball under control and Hay swept in to rob the skipper and crash the ball home on 39 minutes.
If Willenhall dominated the first half, Shepshed more than made up for their lack of presence in the second. The half was six minutes old when a free kick on the right was fired in. Martin Myers got his head to the ball only to direct it straight into the path of Lambert who made no mistake from the centre of the area.
Ten minutes later and another set piece had the Red’s behind. Substitute Gomm getting his head to a free kick as Nathan Vaughan was caught out with the cross ball.
Little was seen of the Willenhall attack as the game crept towards the final whistle, but in true FA Cup style, there was a twist to the story.
After Hay had worked his way into the area and had been tugged to the ground by his shirt with no decision forthcoming, the Willenhall faithful could have been forgiven for thinking the worst, but in the second minute of stoppage time, substitute Karl Edwards sent the fans delirious as his snap shot in the area took a deflection to beat Baldwin and send the game into extra time.
With their tails up, Willenhall once again looked the more dangerous side and that proved to be the case as defender Carl Slater put the visitors into the lead in the 102nd minute with a smart finish from a John Quilt corner.
Dynamo were still battling away and in the 120th minute, Chris Henson, the hero for the home side in the previous round, renewed his cult status at the Dovecote with a goal that sent the tie into a penalty shoot out.
Both sides scored their opening two kicks, then two misses by Shepshed and two from Willenhall, gave Richard Colwell the chance of taking the tie, but Baldwin saved the former Halesowen Town defenders spot kick to leave it to sudden death from twelve yards.
Lambert hit the bar with his penalty to leave Danny McGhee with the opportunity to gain a third qualifying round tie at home to Coalville and the midfielder duly obliged with a cool finish to end a night of high drama in favour of the Red’s.
